How to Write Amazing Wedding Vows

Updated: May 21, 2021

I work with plenty of couples and you can trust me, you won't be the first bride or groom to have felt weak in the knees at the thought of writing your wedding vows!

Loving someone is one thing. Professing your love is quite another.

Even if you are having a private ceremony, you may still be nervous about what to say. Fear not, in this post I'll share my tips for writing wedding vows you and your partner will remember forever.

1. Start with simple bullet points

Why do you love your partner? Is it because they give you butterflies or bring you a coffee in the morning? Is it because they are always there for you or because their jokes keep you laughing?

Whatever the reasons, write them out. One, three, five, ten, it doesn't matter how many points you have. This exercise is to get all the reasons out and down on paper.

If you are having a hard time, sometimes looking at a picture of them while you do this can help spark more reasons you want to mention. Really stuck? Dig out some photos from memorable life events you've shared together.

2. Then create a list of adjectives

If you need a gentle reminder, adjectives are descriptive words. These are words like funny, sweet, and passionate. So sit and write up all those wonderful adjectives that describe your partner.

Once again, there is no perfect number or minimum list of adjectives needed. Just write whatever comes to mind.

3. Start to write using these sentence starters

Here are some tried and true sentence starters to help make your wedding vows a breeze using all the reasons and adjectives you've already written down.

Use all the reasons you've come up with and add in those great descriptive words you love, be sure to include your partner's name as you start off and you can end the vows in a way which suits you. Though a simple "I love you" is a classic ending that I personally feel is always in style.

  • You are my...

  • I couldn't imagine...

  • I have waited for...

  • You... because...

  • I love that you... even though you...

  • When I think of you, I...

  • I promise to... and hope you will...

  • ..., ..., and... are only a few reasons why you are so special to me

  • When I dreamed of my wedding day...

  • When I read this quote, "...", it reminds me...

  • I knew you... because...

Final thoughts

A wedding vow is a declaration and a promise. Whether it's 1 minute or 20, speak from your heart, inject your personality, and be yourself. It can help to smile while you're writing.

If you are writing these vows as a vow renewal they will likely be much longer, and that's okay. After being married any length of time, you will have plenty more to share!
