Possibly the most instantly recognizable attraction in Mexico, the pyramids of Chichen Itza's archaeological zone are a must-see for any visitor to the Yucatan Peninsula. Visitors may no longer touch any of the stone structures, but you will not need to climb the pyramids in order to appreciate and interact with them. Try your hand clapping at the foot of the staircase and listen for the echo returned - said to resemble the call of the crow, part of an historic hurricane warning system!
Architecture nerds will love the practical designs, while the whole family can appreciate the local folklore surrounding construction and present day mystery of the site. Drink plenty of fluids and don't forget to protect yourself from the sun. There isn't much shade on the grounds.

Get the most out of your visit with a local guide, make sure you leave with some actual knowledge about one of Mexico's most famous cultural attractions. Our favorite spot? Stand at the foot of the pyramid and clap your hands, the echo returning the sound to you should have "re-worked" the noise to resemble the call of a crow!

The pyramids are a year-round attraction, with the solstice presenting an additional opportunity to witness something truly unique. The light falling on the staircase of the pyramids and shadows cast are said to resemble a snake and may only be witnessed on a few days of the year.
What else you might need
The pyramids are a highly sought after experience but need protection and maintenance from the increased foot traffic. Entry fees are about M$500 during regular hours but should be arranged in advance to avoid disappointment, the site has limited daily entry. Additional fees or costs can occur during outside hours or for special events, such as the solstice.
