Ernest Hemingway House

Built in 1851, the property became home to famed author Ernest Hemingway in 1931, where he and his wife, Pauline, lived for the following 8 years. It is said that he wrote some of his best works whilst resident. Today, the home is a museum and showcases some of the art collection which may have helped inspire his writing but which certainly pleased the couple at the time.
Even if you're not familiar with Hemingway's writing, you'll enjoy the museum and grounds. The outside appearance in particular is very fitting of the Key West look. Keep an eye out for some of the 40-odd polydactyl cats who today call the site "home", descendants of Hemingway's own 6 or 7-toed cats!

If you're cruising Key West and looking to add just a single culturally or historically significant site to your day's itinerary, we give a strong vote for Hemingway's house! It's also located just across the street from the Key West Lighthouse if you're looking to make the most of your time.
When you should go
The museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm; a 30-minute guided tour is included in the tour ticket but you may be drawn to explore a bit more on your own.
What else you might need
There is typically no need for an advance purchase of tickets to enter the museum. General admission runs about $15 for adults and $6 for children 6-12. There is complimentary admission for children 5 and under.
