London's Metropolitan Police had an earlier home backing onto the street here, giving rise to the name "Scotland Yard" and adding much confusion to the visits of Americans ever since!
Anyone digging deeper into the real history of London and the centuries of strife between Scotland and England might appreciate the little chunk of history, with the landmark sitting in the defacto embassy area for Scottish royalty circa 1515. There's also a little slice of more modern pop culture here in the Harry Potter films.
Planning your trip
Film buffs and Potter fans may recognize this back alley as the secret entrance to the Ministry of Magic from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. All that's missing is the red phone booth, which was a set prop for the actual film and not a working phone box.
As mentioned above, this little corner of Whitehall is fairly accessible if you wish to take a moment to enjoy it during your day in London. It's just north of Westminster and the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Abbey, and south from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery.
When you should go
If you're already on a stroll of Whitehall or on foot between the sights of Trafalgar Square and Westminster you can easily fit a moment into Great Scotland Yard. You'll likely find bus drivers parked up between routes and a quiet back street with few other visitors at most times of day.
It's an outdoor landmark, be prepared for the weather when you visit.
What else you might need
It's unlikely you'd even need reservations for the pub here, enjoy yourself but watch the bus traffic.
