Your Guide To
Greece

An accessible destination with rich history spanning thousands of years. You'll be hopping from beach to ruins with something delicious to try at every turn, the food is incredible! The local people tend to be warm and friendly, with a great sense of humor. We really enjoy the islands but there's something for almost every travel style around the archipelago or on the mainland.
With some 6,000 islands, it's no surprise that water activities such as yachting are popular. Seafood and beach life are plentiful, too. Some of the world's most famous beaches are found in Greece. Some of Greece's beautiful islands might be the most photographed spots in the Mediterranean, with picture postcard views to really take home some great memories.
Planning your trip
Plenty of cruise itineraries feature at least one call to port in the islands, namely those visiting the Eastern Mediterranean. But if you really want to figure out which corner of paradise is perfect for you, consider a Greek Island cruise. There's a lot to explore and the islands each have their own feel to them, a single stop just doesn't do Greece any justice.
Even if you're not keen on cruising, boating is likely on the horizon if you're visiting Greece. We'd recommend against using the local ferry services for most visitors, however. The opportunity for a small delay due to winds, waves, and work-related issues can quickly cascade into a much larger disruption. You're only spending a few days to a couple weeks here, don't waste an entire night with stress and substandard accommodation because of the ferry.
When you should go
There are flights serving Greece as a tourist destination throughout the year, with destinations such as Athens or Crete receiving guests year round. However, many cruise itineraries and hotel properties located on the Greek Islands only operate between April and October, with peak season falling mid-June through the earlier parts of September. For the most opportunity to enjoy local life while experiencing a significant reduction in crowds, consider visiting in May or late September through October.
What else you might need
As part of the European Union's Schengen area, there are freedom of movement rules which make it easy to visit Greece as a tourist for US passport holders. There is no visa requirement for stays of up to 90 days in the EU's Schengen area, this is a cumulative total during any 180-day period, so longer stays or multiple trips may require specific planning and consideration. American visitors must now secure an ETIAS or European Travel Information and Authorization System in advance of your trip, once approved the digital pass should last 3 years. Fees are currently estimated at €8. You may also be required to prove onward travel, sufficient funds, and other conditions of entry.
