The island has changed hands among cruise lines in past and guests of both Holland America Line and Carnival Cruises. It's a little further away from Miami than many of the other private cruise destinations, perhaps allowing the attraction to thrive. Winning awards for guest experiences for nearly two decades.
Among the earliest intended goals of Holland America was to preserve the natural habitat of the island. That can mean peaceful opportunities to view and enjoy a bit of nature. Balance any peaceful observation time with the island's potential to host more guests than those of its competitors, with two cruise lines calling to port here.
Planning your trip
As far as private islands associated with cruise lines go, Half Moon Cay is a little larger than most. There has been considerable attention paid to encouraging wildlife to share the spaces and for nature to reclaim some areas to help maintain the feel of an exclusive private island. Because there may be more visitors to the island, you might want to secure your most anticipated on-island activities in advance.
When you should go
Peak season runs roughly mid-December through March, with some increase in family presence on the island during school summer holiday periods. Expect a reduced crowd during September and possibly May.
What else you might need
You'll need to be a cruise passenger of either Carnival or Holland America Line to visit the accessible areas of Half Moon Cay.
