The original site dates as far back as 1883, with significant updates over a 7-year span of renovations from 2006 through 2013. The museum is renown for its remarkable collection of Minoan artifacts, among the first civilizations of Europe. It is a very interesting, well presented collection of antiquities even if there is a disproportionate volume of pottery.
Art & history enthusiasts will appreciate the collection and revel in its modern presentation. If you're in Heraklion for a day trip or longer, you might make a special trip to explore the museum.
Planning your trip
We'd definitely pair this experience with a visit to the Palace of Knossos, maybe enjoying your stop at the museum afterward to escape the heat of the afternoon and diving a little deeper on the arts & handiwork of the era.

The museum is busiest during the early afternoon, right after you'd want to enjoy your lunch. This might be due to the tour group timings, but it could just as likely be a reflection of the need to enjoy some air conditioning during the hottest point in the day.
