Also known as "Iraklion", it's the largest city on the island of Crete and named for the hero of Greek mythology, Hercules. It might be interesting to note that the symbol of Hercules and the stories of the demi-god aren't always positive among various regional cultures.
Heraklion is a great call to port for cruise enthusiasts and might feature as your welcome point onto the island if you're headed elsewhere to enjoy some of the beaches for which Crete is known.
Planning your trip
Several historic influences remain in the city, including a fair number of Venetian landmarks. Among the most visible if arriving by sea, the Venetian Fortress at the port or the Morosini Fountain in the city's center.
When you should go
The sights of Heraklion will welcome you throughout the year, for the most part. Crete sees vacationers through a larger part of the year than some of the other islands of Greece.
