A Royal Residence in the city, the original buildings were constructed in 1605 and later evolved into the grand, albeit minor palace seen today throughout the 17th and early 18th century as notable dignitaries and members of the Royal Family took up residence. Kensington Palace attracts far fewer visitors than Buckingham Palace and is located in very accessible Hyde Park.
You'll enjoy the history and decadence of the Palace, but as a Royal Residence, you might find yourself drawn to the specific history and glamour of the Royal Family. Enjoy the gardens and wider Hyde Park areas, but certainly explore the fascinating people and stories which fill the property.
Planning your trip
It is currently the official London residence of a number of members of the Royal Family, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, among others. There is a fee to enter, which helps keep crowds down considerably.
When you should go
During regular operation, Kensington Palace is open year round aside from December 24-26. During March through October, the site is open from 10am through 6pm, last admission at 5pm; November through February, 10am through 4pm, with last admission at 3pm.
What else you might need
There is an admission requirement for Kensington Palace, comparable to the Tower of London or Westminster Abbey. You'll likely find that the crowds are better here.
