One of the most accessible Keys, Key Largo can be a day trip from Miami or a focus point of your itinerary to the island chain. The key is home to the only underwater state park in the US at John Pennekamp.
While Key Largo is famed for its outdoor exploits, such as water sports or fishing, you might be a little disappointed in the beaches. There are more mangroves here than sandy waterfront. That doesn't mean you shouldn't include it as a great destination on your itinerary, just plan well in your adventure!
Planning your trip
Key Largo is one of the easiest destination among the Florida Keys to access before or after your cruise from PortMiami or even Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.
Snorkeling from John Pennekamp is a highlight for many, but even if snorkeling isn't your thing you should plan to get out on the water. Rent a kayak or test your balance on a stand up paddle board to casually explore the mangroves and look for manatees.
When you should go
The Florida Keys attract visitors throughout the year, although peak months stretch from December through March. Summer months see an increase in local visitors during school holidays, with September being the least favorable month to visit.
Hot and humid during the summer months, you're going to need access to air conditioning to stay comfortable and get a good night's sleep. The winter months are typically a bit cooler but still nice and warm during the day.
What else you might need
The Florida Keys are exceedingly popular, for an overnight stay you might need to book early. Day trips are accessible but you might be surprised by the traffic arriving from Miami or returning from a stay further along Highway 1.
