Many visitors to Key West forget that the island's history is deeply entwined with maritime culture and even featured a well-established salvage operation. To help keep seafarers safe, a lighthouse was installed in 1825 and subsequently manned for more than 120 years. Today, you can ascend the 88 iron steps for a great view of the city or admire the collection in the museum.
History buffs including those with a penchant for naval history or seafaring & shipwrecks may enjoy the lighthouse keeper's museum.
Planning your trip
The site is right across the street from the popular Ernest Hemingway House. Just look up! You'd just as well pair them together to make the most of your time, especially if you're only in Key West for a day during your cruise.
When you should go
You'll not likely have much difficulty in accessing this landmark or making the most of your visit. It's a reasonably quick experience which means any crowds might dissipate as soon as they materialize.
What else you might need
Tickets are available on arrival for general admission. Adults should expect about $12 and $9 for seniors 62+. Children 6-12 for $5. The lighthouse is open year-round aside from Christmas day, 9:30am to 4:30pm.
