Key West is one of the most well-known and highly sought after vacation spots in Florida. A favorite destination for cruise passengers, day trippers from Miami, and those who just want to relax and enjoy the unique vibe of the Florida Keys.
You'll see an eclectic blend of local history and culture are met with a healthy dose of outdoor activities and nighttime revelry. Most homes here have a tin roof and you'll see almost as many colorful facades as decorative balcony railings, known as "gingerbread".
Planning your trip
If you're only in Key West as part of your cruise and a call to port, you'll be pleased to note that most ships call in almost on top of Mallory Square. It's so convenient and pedestrian friendly that we'd likely not recommend any specific shore excursion but to just wander on your own and explore.
There's a lot of shipwreck and seafaring history in Key West, enjoy a ghost trolley tour or celebrate the local culture during a lively event such as Conch Republic Independence Celebration & Parade. If you don't have at least one drink on Duval Street, have you even really been to Key West?
When you should go
Key West is absolutely a year-round destination. The presence of vacationers mixed with plenty of local residents leads to a good variety of festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
What else you might need
Despite the exotic scenery, the Florida Keys are all US soil and require no documentation for US passport holders.
