Named for Queen Lili'uokalani, the gardens near-25 acre plot is billeted as one of the "largest authentic ornamental Japanese gardens outside of Japan." The gardens enjoyed their 100th anniversary in 2017, commemorating the migrant labour of Japanese immigrants in reaping sugar cane.
In addition to the picturesque nature of the gardens, you might enjoy a visit if you've got any interest in the particular fusion of cultures local to Hawaii throughout the past 100+ years.
Planning your trip
Not far from Hilo, visitors can enjoy complimentary entry to the garden and great proximity to Hilo's town centre and cruise port.
When you should go
Consider adding the gardens to your day's itinerary if you're cruising into Hilo and you're just looking to spend a spare hour or so on a casual stroll.
