Miami is a world famous destination for sun seekers, party makers, and especially cruise passengers, with the world's largest passenger terminals almost steps away from the downtown and beach areas.
It's a vibrant city whose diaspora offer interesting little neighborhoods to explore, alongside culinary and cultural exploits. There are also plenty of sporting events and other gatherings to fill the calendar and help you make the most of your time in the sunshine.
Planning your trip
Technically the beach areas of South Beach and other sandy hotspots are located in the city of Miami Beach. Plan to spend the afternoon on the beach but certainly don't miss the glow of the Art Deco District.
When you should go
Certainly a year-round destination, with plenty to offer throughout the various seasons of South Florida. High season runs roughly December through March, with a lull in September highlighting the peak of the warm, humid summer season.
The weather ranges from relatively warm in the winter months, to downright hot and humid in summer. There's typically a week or two in December or January which see a temperature drop uncharacteristic of the remainder of the year, but which helps the flowering orchids now growing there to bloom. Expect heat and a welcome escape from the cold further north if you're visiting even during October or April.
