Athens has a rich history, enjoying influence over several eras of rule and stretching back into pre-history. The museum is well appointed and easily breaks up different timelines or types of artifacts to enjoy, making it really easy to get lost in the story of Greece!
Several small areas of the museum have undergone significant modernization and with great results. The floor plan is relatively straightforward and visitors can easily while the hours away, strolling through pottery, yes, but also medallions, coins, weaponry, mythology, and more...
Planning your trip
Our favorite piece in the permanent collection is probably the bronze statue of a young jockey on horseback. There's a great length of history to explore here, but you'd be forgiven for thinking the Greeks did nothing but make war and pottery if you didn't have a guide to usher you through the more impactful corners of the collection.
When you should go
Open 9am to 4pm on Mondays and Wed-Sat, late hours Thursdays from 1pm to 8pm. The museum is closed on Sundays. Check the schedule for temporary exhibits.
What else you might need
Admission is available at the time of arrival. There is a small coat & baggage check for items up to about the size of a backpack as you will not be permitted to bring anything in with you.
