Once the largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos is today a moderately sized Greek Island which slips under the radar for many American and Canadian tourists. There's a rich history here but you might have to dig a little beyond the beautiful beaches to find it.
Naxos is a beach-lover's dream, with a variety of sand beaches dotted around the island, especially the western coast. It's less developed as a tourist destination, which can be seen as a positive for those looking to escape the crowds drawn to nearby Santorini. Just be aware that there aren't the same variety of boutique accommodations and that the pace of life might be another level of relaxed.
Planning your trip
Naxos doesn't feature on too many commercial cruise itineraries, but it is certainly a boating destination and features a good number of sand beaches to explore.
Naxos Town is the focal point for many visitors to Naxos, it's where you'll arrive or depart. Be sure to check out the Apollo Temple on the city's north side.
When you should go
Like many of Greece's islands, Naxos attracts visitors through the months of April through October, with the busiest months being July and August. Naxos is a beach lover's destination, with water temperatures being at their warmest and most comfortable during the late June to early September period.
What else you might need
If you've arrived by air via Athens or as part of your Greek cruise, you will have cleared customs by the time you arrive in Naxos. Expect your Schengen visa duration to accumulate while you're here.
