A once-glorious palace of the Minoan people, among the first civilizations of Europe and named for their king, Minos. Here, stories of the Minotaur come to life as visitors might better understand the people who held such beliefs.
Much of the ruins have been reduced to rubble during earthquakes of centuries passed. There are a few spaces with more modern preservation techniques applied, alongside a few attempts to rebuild columns and frescoes of the central spaces. You'll enjoy the site if you're really into the history of Ancient Greece and understanding early European civilizations.
Planning your trip
Some of the biggest attractions on the Palace grounds include the frescoes and colorful (restored) columns. You'll likely find a line to poke your head in the throne room, one of the oldest such examples in all of Europe.
When you should go
We understand the site to be the second most popular attraction in Greece, after the Acropolis of Athens! Which makes for a busy visit during the summer months. Plan to arrive early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day during those busy times of year in June through August.
What else you might need
You will avoid wasting a portion of your day by arranging your tickets in advance, you might even combine your visit to the Palace of Knossos with an afternoon at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum with a combination ticket. Expect about $18 for the single site and just over $23 for the pair.
