An exceedingly popular site and highlight for many visiting Hawaii. The memorial represents the resting place of the majority of seamen who lost their lives in the attacks on Pearl Harbor at the end of WWII.
The site's maintenance and administration is provided by the National Park Service, with plenty of options for tour packages including transportation. Be mindful that the site holds significant symbolism to those in the Services and their families. Access to the sunken vessel itself is heavily moderated, expect a short stay at the memorial itself while spending further time at the museum space and other supporting attractions.
Planning your trip
A definite must-see if you're calling to port in Honolulu. You'll find options to visit through your cruise line or as an independent shore excursion/extension of your pre or post-cruise stay.
As tickets to the memorial are complimentary, you'll find the only reasonable upgraded tour options include private transportation or advanced arrangements for a narrated experience.
When you should go
There is no bad time to visit a war memorial, nor to pay your respects. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial makes it really simple with extensive visiting hours, open 7am to 5pm every day of the year outside Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
What else you might need
Entry to the Pearl Harbor Visitor's Center, the two on-site museums, and the USS Arizona Memorial are all complimentary, as is the official parking. Note that tickets for a scheduled visit may be arranged up to 60 days in advance for arrivals after 11am, with walk-in tickets available on a first come, first serve basis earlier in the day. Tickets are also released on a revolving 24-hour basis. There may be a non-refundable $1 per ticket convenience fee and a limit on the number any one person may purchase at one time.
