Originally a small town making its livelihood from fishing, the ferry service to Cozumel and all the great aquatic activities found there started bringing more visitors. Those who would then find that much of the same quality of beach and marine life is also abundant in Playa.

A trendy locale giving you another option outside of Cancun when looking for the perfect vacation spot. Many people visit for the same types of amenities you'd find further north in Cancun, but in a smaller, more accessible town.

Planning your trip

As a resort area known for its beaches, you should make the most of your time here in and on the water, maybe take in some world-class snorkeling. In town, make sure you stroll Quinta Avenida for something to eat, drink, or to bring home as a souvenir.

When you should go

Playa del Carmen is a year-round destination, but busiest between mid-December and March. If you can be flexible and travel in April, you may enjoy much of the same great weather but with fewer crowds.
