The easternmost island of the Galapagos hosted the first landing of Charles Darwin and today hosts a population of more than 6,000 people. It is also home to the capital of the Galapagos archipelago, Puerto Barquerizo Moreno.
Iconic scenery and plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some exotic wildlife, you'll enjoy San Cristobal if you're into photography, hiking, and just generally enjoy nature. This island might represent one of the best opportunities to observe sea lions, you might feel as though they are observing you!
Planning your trip
Inner loop itineraries or those featuring stops in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and Punta Pitt enjoy call to port in San Cristobal Island.
Populations of sea birds, sea lions, marine iguanas, and even the giant tortoise live on the island. A great site for viewing wildlife exists at Punta Pitt, while the only freshwater lake in the entirety of the Galapagos exists at El Junco. Look for opportunities to snorkel at Kicker Rock.
When you should go
Like many places elsewhere in the Galapagos, there are a few peak periods in January, July, and September. You might have the best opportunity to avoid the crowds in November or early December.
What else you might need
Your visit to San Cristobal requires a permit to the Galapagos alongside any tourist visa to Ecuador. This is typically arranged in conjunction with your cruise or organized tour.
