Lava tubes are a naturally occurring phenomena, where the push of molten rock has hollowed out caves and caverns as it travels to the surface during volcanic activity. The Thurston Lava Tube, Nahuku in Hawaiian, was first documented in 1913 by one Lorrin Thurston. Today's visitors can enjoy a few more comforts in a more developed entry, complete with basic lighting. The tube's earlier stalactites and stalagmites have unfortunately been removed by unscrupulous visitors of decades passed.

If you're already planning to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you should consider adding the lava tubes to your day's itinerary. If you've a particular interest in the volcanic history or desire a first-hand experience among inspiring aspects of Hawaii's culture, you might also make a dedicated trip!

Planning your trip

Nahuku is found in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and remains among the top spots for viewing a lava tube and as an attraction in its own right. This is in part due to its accessible location, only about 3km (1.5 miles) from the entry or an even shorter walk from the Kilauea Iki overlook. Bring a flashlight if you care to explore the 300m+ (1,000 ft+) of cavern beyond the lighting.

When you should go

If you can plan to arrive earlier in the day you should avoid the bulk of the crowds. The mile-long loop to walk the serviced path might take you about 30-45 minutes, depending on how quickly you walk or how frequently you stop for a photo.

What else you might need

The lava tubes are located within the national park. You'll need to pay park fees to enter, expect anywhere from $15 for an individual pedestrian pass, all the way up to $30 for a private vehicle.
