Standing under the Hellenic Parliament and at the eastern border of Syntagma Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier watches over the central square of Athens. The tomb is guarded 24-hours a day by the Presidential Guard or Evzones, an elite ceremonial procession bearing traditional parade dress and performing their unique sweeping style of march.
Of course anyone with an interest in military history will appreciate their visit here. But even where your understanding of Greece's more recent military past is lacking, there's enough going on here to delight visitors of all ages with the precision drills of the Evzones.
Planning your trip
The Guard is, in our experience, quite accommodating to tourists in that they know you're going to be interested in taking a picture and will likely vocalize some instructions as to what is or is not permitted, just in case you're unsure of your chosen spot to stand. We might only suggest the utmost care and respect accompanies your visit, it is a tomb, after all, and the Evzones are not present simply for entertainment; they are real soldiers and active in their duties.
When you should go
There are small regular ceremonies throughout the day, the most desirable experience takes place on Sunday mornings at 11am. Be sure to arrive early to secure your spot for a great view, there aren't any sort of barriers but a member of the Evzones will likely get involved to direct you if you're too close or in the way.
