One of the fastest growing tourism hot spots of Southeast Asia, Vietnam's economic growth has spurred a great development in travel infrastructure. Take that as a positive, but be aware that there are more visitors from North America, Europe, and even other Asian destinations as a result.

Vietnam is a surprisingly vast country, with swathes of coastline and a great diversity of attractions. You'll never again satisfy your pho craving once you've visited, Vietnam is a culinary destination. There are plenty of temples to see, if that's what you'd like to do, but don't feel like that's all there is. Vietnam War buffs will really enjoy how open the country's memorials, museums, and landmarks have become during the last few decades.

Planning your trip

As an up and coming destination, there are a surprising number of river cruise options to sail the waters of the mighty Mekong. You can join up into Cambodia on most itineraries.

Featuring on both regional cruise itineraries and as part of a grand or world cruise from some lines, expect a few major cities on the list of shore trips. You might also aim to extend your stay in Southeast Asia if you're embarking or disembarking in Singapore, for example.

As of writing it is not possible for US or Canadian visitors to drive in Vietnam. You'll be most comfortable joining an organized tour or arranging a private one to explore some of the more remote corners of the country. City breaks are a little easier to navigate these days.

When you should go

We'd argue that Vietnam is a year-round destination, depending on the motivations for your trip. The high season is roughly December through February.

There is a definite rainy season, peaking in July and August. However it may start as early as April and extend to September, even October or early November in some years. If you're after warm weather, be aware that the north (Hanoi) can be a little cooler than might be expected of a tropical country during the winter months.

What else you might need

American passport holders may enter as tourists for up to 30 days and require a passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended travel dates. The visa itself will also take an entire page from your passport. Considerable confusion and unnecessary fees can be avoided by applying directly to the correct embassy or consulate contact, please contact your Odyssean Travel advisor or refer to our blog content for the latest updates on correct visa applications when applying for any electronic or visa on arrival process.
